Here is the first example: CJ is standing in a Walkway, next to him are two high fences wich the other gang cant shoot over. What you should do is take the tips that were mentioned above by the topic maker. Stand down at the walkway and shoot the ppl that are coming through. Make sure youre far enough back.
The red territories is either a gang war or, most likely, purple and orange territories together (the red area is actually two territories, you can check it using a savegame editor). The grey area is green and purple, what the topic starter said.

One of the most recognized features in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the gang warfare, wherein you must take over and protect territories for your gang. While this doesn’t have a direct impact on the story, it can make the game more difficult if you must frequently fight off rival gangs while exploring the world.

This means that both Ballas and GSF will spawn within its boundaries, and of course they will have spontaneous fights among each other. It takes a few lost gang wars to completely lose a territory and Grove Street is completely forced out.
